STANFORD IN NEW YORK - Spring 2023

a collection of memories, experiences, and reflections from my (second) quarter spent in new york city. from the city that never sleeps to the city that stole my heart, i will cherish all of moments here that let me grow into a better version of myself.

Objective 1: ART + culture

Outcome Statement: I developed a deeper understanding of art across the city by exploring different displays of art throughout the city and also creating some of my own.

Outcome Statement: I have developed lifecycle marketing skills by crafting email, SMS, and push notification campaigns to increase company revenue for Bokksu Market.

Outcome Statement: I developed a better relationship with myself and my mental health by spending more focusing on self care and personal reflection.

Outcome Statement: I have developed deeper relationships with professionals at Bokksu across multiple teams and have contributed to the performance of an agile team working with multiple branches of the company.

Outcome Statement: I have dedicated more time this quarter to learning Japanese language, engaging in conversations in Japanese, and understanding the ways the culture presents itself throughout the city.

Overview + Future learning

The experience that I have gained during my quarters in NYC is, in many ways, more valuable to my future career goals than what I have experienced in the classroom alone. While I have been involved in marketing opportunities on campus, my internship allowed me to gain first-hand experience of what a career in marketing may look like. I also gained valuable skills in marketing strategy and data analytics that are nearly impossible to gather from a typical university course. Through both my internship and just the new setting of the city, I faced and solved new challenges that helped me to grow into a better version of myself.

I am happy that the extended time of an additional quarter allowed me to take on even greater responsibilities at Bokksu and secure a summer position with the company. I remain hopeful that through this opportunity, or perhaps another one, I will find myself back in the city after graduation. After working on the side of the advertisers, I am interested to see how my perspective will change when I return to my Stanford communication courses that focus on evolving media.

With my experiences across my internship and the city, I believe I have accomplished the general objectives of the SiNY program. I have loved my time in NYC and my time with the SiNY program so much, and I am excited to see where this opportunity and experience can take me in the future.

additional learning

In addition to all of the learning goals that I had initially set out at the beginning of this quarter, I experienced a lot of personal growth and independence during my time in NYC. This independence gave me more confidence in myself but also reinforced the strength of my close relationships that I miss so dearly. After almost six months in the city, I am ready to go home - even though I still love this place.
